Almost a decade ago now, I’d send messages to people like Tio and get no response. It was a weird place to be, especially when you were a fan. Over the years I’ve gotten to understand what it’s like to be on both sides of the conversations. Here are a few tips on how to make things easier for everyone.
1. GET STRAIGHT TO THE POINT
Don’t waste time asking them how they are doing. If you want to greet them, keep it short and quickly move on to the reason you are contacting them for.
2. INTRODUCE YOURSELF
State clearly who you are. Depending on platform you will need to give your real names, where you are contacting them from (and where you got their contact details from)
3. SEND EVERYTHING AS ONE MESSAGE
You only get one shot. Write your greetings, intro and reason for contacting them as one message. Don’t wait for them to respond to your greeting before you get to the point.
4. BE VERY PATIENT
These are very busy people and a response can even take weeks to months. It’s not you, it’s them. But the better you present your case the faster you are likely to get feedback when they do eventually see it.
Don’t send files. Send links. Use a trusted host like Google Drive or Dropbox. For audio/video use platforms like YouTube or Soundcloud. Specifically for emails, limit it to 1 or 2 links.
